Sensory PE

Pupils at Monega who have Special Educational Needs (SEND) begin to make sense of the world around them as they grow through the exploration of new textures, materials and resources.

As well as having timetabled curriculum lessons with their classes, our pupils have additional morning sessions called Sensory PE. Sensory PE is a valuable way of engaging children in activities that will heighten their senses and enrich their learning. The daily sessions which are run help cover the four broad areas of SEND support:

  • Communication and interaction (ASD or Speech and Language difficulties).

  • Cognition and learning (specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia).

  • Social, emotional and mental health (behaviour difficulties/emotional dysregulation).

  • Sensory and/or physical needs (visual impairment/physical difficulties).

Each session is timetabled for 30 minutes, which each SEND pupil having atleast one allocated slot per week.

The session is semi-structured by the use of the choosing board. Each pupil will have a chance to choose which activity they would like to do, with their 1:1 adult supporting them when needed.
